Forty-Six Fellows in Attendance: Mary Anderson-Rowland, Ron Barr, Bob Braswell, Marvin Criswell, Frank Croft, Gary Crossman, Jose B. Cruz, Dick Culver, Denny Davis, Richard Dorf, Bob English, Lyle D. 1. The 2004 meeting of the ASEE Academy of Fellows was held in Meeting Room 151G of the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City. Following the continental break-fast (the food ran short once, but was replenished) the meeting was called to order by Chairman Lyle Feisel. Before he could catch his breath to welcome the Fellows in atten-dance, Angelo J. (“Dress Down Angie”) Perna jumped up and announced his new career as a model.
2. Minutes of the 2003 Meeting of the Academy of Fellows in Nashville were ignored. (These had appeared earlier in one of Ed Jones’ excellent ASEE Academy of Fellows Newsletters, and no subsequent complaints were received.)
3. The new Fellows present gave brief comments about themselves: Robert M. Braswell, Florida A&M and Florida State; Marvin E. Criswell, Colorado State; Jose B. Cruz, Ohio State; Richard C. Dorf, California, Davis; Lucy C. Morse, Central Florida; Robert H. Todd, Brigham Young; William Troxler, Capitol College; Jack L. Weintraub, Middlesex County College; Ward O. Winer, Georgia Tech; David N. Wormley, Penn State. Two new Fellows were unable to be present and sent their regrets: Stephen Director, Michi-gan, and Renata S. Engel, Penn State. Chairman Feisel congratulated the new Fellows and called for a round of applause, and all those present responded warmly.
4. ASEE President Duane Abata gave brief comments, noting that ASEE has had a good year and that the Salt Lake City Conference has been excellent in all respects, continuing a long-term trend. He related the story of how he first became interested in becoming an engineer; his high school guidance counselor asked what he wanted to be, and he said “a machinist.” The counselor, who had taught him mathematics, told him he should consider becoming an engineer. When Duane asked what an engineer was, he was told, “It’s like a machinist, except that the buttons on your coat are polished.”
5. ASEE Executive Director Frank Huband thanked the Fellows for their contributions to the Society over the years. He observed that ASEE survives because of the good work of volunteers. Chairman Feisel thanked Frank for all he as done for ASEE, placing the Soci-ety on a sound financial footing and building a strong programmatic base.
6. Chairman Feisel presented the report of the Nominating Committee, which consisted of himself and Angelo Perna. The following individuals were recommended for election to a term of two years, beginning at the close of the present meeting:
Chair: John W. Prados
Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer: Edwin C. Jones
Upon motion by Stewart Slater, the proposed slate was elected by acclamation. Chairman Feisel congratulated the newly-elected officers, and noted that Ed Jones has also agreed to continue as Newsletter Editor for the coming year.
7. The Fellows present introduced themselves and gave brief statements about their cur-rent situations. Ed Jones and John Prados thanked the Fellows for their vote of confi-dence. Ed invited the Fellows to submit appropriate “engineering education” photographs for inclusion in the Newsletter.
8. Although no one asked how to become a Life Member this year, in consideration of the age and length of ASEE service of many Fellows the Secretary went ahead and cop-ied the information below from the ASEE web site:
“ASEE has established the membership category of Life Member to recognize those individuals who have been active ASEE members for many years. To qualify for Life Membership, a person's age in years plus continuous years of paid membership must total 100 or more (for example, at age 65 with 35 continuous years of paid membership). Life Members pay no national membership dues, receive ASEE Prism at no charge, have full access to members-only areas of the web site, and enjoy a greatly reduced, nominal registration rate for the Annual conference. Life Members may elect to receive print versions of either/both the Journal of Engineering Education or/and Pro-files of Engineering & Engineering Technology Colleges for $10/year each, and do pay for mem-bership in any dues-assessing Professional Interest Divisions to which they belong.

9. Chairman Feisel declared Angie Perna’s dress code motion out of order before Angie had a chance to open his mouth.
10. In spite of this rebuff, Angie Perna called on all the Fellows present to give Chair-man Feisel a big hand for the great job he has done, and the Fellows responded with loud applause.
11. The Fellows were unusually subdued this year, and no one else heckled Angie.
12. In response to a question about the current number of ASEE Fellows, Chairman Feisel referred the questioner to the ASEE web site.
13. Lyle Feisel adjourned the meeting, thanking the Fellows for the opportunity to serve the group as Chairman and observing that he will probably be the last Chair of the Acad-emy of Fellows to carry a slide rule in his pocket.
