The Engineering Research Council of the ASEE exists to support and enhance research in engineering, technology, computing, and applied science in educational organizations.
The newly imagined institute will include exciting speakers and opportunities to connect with colleagues on topics critical to the success of research leadership.
Interactive panel discussion facilitated by the members of the ASEE ERC Board of Directors. The session will focus on the challenges facing research leadership. The Board Members will share their perspectives and experiences in dealing with various areas of responsibility and participants will break into groups to discuss areas of responsibilities in research leadership.
We will have an engaging discussion with Professor Stephanie Goodwin, Research Scientist in Psychology at Wright State University, on how COVID-19 has shed light on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, DEI, issues in higher education. We will have breakout discussions to discuss what we can do to make a difference within our sphere of influence, particularly related to evaluation and promotion and tenure.
A nationally recognized scholar in diversity, equity and inclusion, Dr. Stephanie Goodwin has 20+ years of experience in higher education as a scientist, educator, and academic leader with expertise in diversity and inclusion, faculty development, and academic affairs. Her scholarly expertise includes social cognition and intergroup biases (e.g., stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination) and bystander intervention to reduce bias and harassment. Founder of Incluxion Works, Inc., her "Speaking Up" workshops have promoted dialogue to change organizational culture and reduce identity harassment at 25+ universities and professional organizations across the US. She earned a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Goodwin is an elected Fellow of the Society of Experimental Social Psychology.
Back by popular demand, we will have an informative presentation and Q&A with Matt Hourihan, Director of the R&D Budget and Policy Program for the American Association for the Advancement of Science, on the Federal budget outlook. Group discussions will follow on planning for large center grants and on collaboration, including equitable collaboration, and collaborations across units and across universities. You will not be disappointed that you participated in this session.
We will provide workshop outputs for the attendees shortly after the meetings. Please know that while each University may have a single member of the ERC, non-members are certainly welcomed at the ERC Annual Conference. Deans, associate deans, department chairs, and other research leaders, from both Engineering and other disciplines, are encouraged to attend this conference. If the agenda topics are of value to others at your University, we encourage you to pass along the invitation and recommendation to attend.
Registered participants will receive calendar invitations and links to join each session.
If you have additional questions, please contact the Conferences Department at conferences@asee.org.
