This ticketed event is $100 advance registration and $110 on-site registration. This workshop will provide an introduction to active learning in engineering, where hands-on activities are designed to reinforce the theoretical concepts taught in lecture-based courses. The availability of inexpensive and portable electronics has enabled experimentation outside of the laboratory classroom, during lectures as the concepts are discussed or in the student dorms and informal learning environments where students carry out experiments as part of assignments. Participants will engage in a series of hands-on learning activities, designed at RPI, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech, that demonstrate the diversity of the theoretical concepts that can be taught via active learning and will address topics recommended by participants, as indicated in a pre-conference survey. Participants will leave the workshop with boards, lab manuals, and supplemental learning and instructional materials so that participants can easily apply this innovative technique in their own courses.
