The Engineering Co-op Program at the University of British Columbia, the largest such program in Western Canada, secures co-op work term opportunities from 1,400-1,500 students annually, of which 8-12% work in more than 30 countries. Preparing globally minded engineering students for industry is a key facet of the program. International co-op work term experiences develop student’s intercultural skills and prepare them to be true global citizens. Engineering co-op students who attain an international experience are better prepared for today’s industries, have broader career choices after graduation, and a high percentage return to their host country after convocation.

A workshop is presented for co-op practitioners who are interested in learning how to develop an international focus or expanding their international program opportunities.

Best practices will be shared on:

* How to survey student interest, compile data, and set strategic international objectives;
* Target marketing internationally for engineering co-operative education opportunities;
* Develop engineering student personal marketing plans;
* Engage international engineering employers and follow-up strategies;
* Assist employers with the visa process;
* Pre-departure and safety training;
* Site visits and check-in by Skype, email, and telephone;
* Engineering technical work term reports and evaluations;
* Debrief the international experience; and
* Integrate students back into the classroom successfully.

1. Ms. Jenny Reilly

   University of British Columbia, Vancouver

   Jenny Reilly is the Director of the University of British Columbia's Engineering Co-operative Education Program and the Director of The Canada-Japan Co-op Program. She is responsible for overseeing the placement of over 1,400 Co-op student placements nationally and internationally on an annual basis. She has a strong human resources background, which includes over fifteen years human resource management and consulting, recruitment, marketing, training and development experience. Jenny has worked at The University of British Columbia for the past twelve years and is the past Chair of the Canadian Association of Cooperative Education Accreditation Council.
