This panel focuses on negotiation, with an emphasis on providing practical ideas and strategies relevant to academic professionals at both entry- and mid-career levels who seek career opportunities. There will be an emphasis on negotiating one’s start-up package with an eye toward understanding the elements involved, both from the future employee’s perspective and from the department chair or dean’s perspective. The panel will discuss what can be negotiated, how one might proceed to discuss these, and how listening is critical to negotiation. Participants will be provided with practical advice and examples of effective negotiation.
