U264C·SUNDAY WORKSHOP: Choosing an Assessment Instrument for Effective Classroom and Project Evaluation
Workshop Sponsored Sessions
Sun. June 15, 2014 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Room 111, Indiana Convention Center
Session Description

Ticketed event: $40.00
This workshop entails assisting participants in writing clear and measurable goals, objectives, and activities for their engineering program or project, and identifying assessment strategies to achieve their intended goals. This may include research projects or classroom assessments. Participants will identify resources, activities, outputs (measures), outcomes, and impacts of their self-identified project. Then, they will design an evaluation plan by writing an evaluative research question, designing a relevant study, selecting an appropriate assessment instrument, and identifying means of administering the assessment and interpreting the results. We will show participants how to use the ASSESS web tool to locate information about relevant, reliable and valid assessment instruments. Participants will also be encouraged to consider and share their own measurement and evaluation challenges and solutions.

The workshop agenda will include:
a. 9:00-9:25 - Introductions, sharing about projects and challenges.
b. 9:25-9:45 - Instruction: Connecting Evaluation and Assessment (describe the difference and how assessment informs evaluation; talk about classroom assessment; importance of identifying broader goals, project goals, objectives, activities – and how they align).
c. 9:45-10:40 - Develop Logic Model: Participants work in groups of 3; spend 10-15 minutes individually identifying broad goals and project goals as well as measurable objectives and activities. They then share with the group, work through whether objectives/activities are actually measurable and if so, how they can be measured (identify outputs/measures) and from whom data could be collected (resources).
d. 10:40-10:55 - Using ASSESS to locate instrument information.
e. 10:55-11:45 - Design an evaluation plan using an instrument identified through ASSESS (or other source).
f. 11:45-12:00 - Unpack the Workshop: What did participants learn? What question(s) do participants still have?

Workshop materials and snacks will be provided through funds in the ASSESS budget, NSF DUE#1065486, and through a $30 workshop fee per participant. We will need Internet access in the room (funds to come from the ASSESS budget). Participants will be expected to provide their own laptop. Handouts will be provided. If possible, we would like to request a list of registrants’ emails so we can ask participants to come prepared with ideas on projects and associated goals. We will also include this information in our promotional materials. Speakers include: Dr. Jennifer LeBeau, research associate in the College of Education Learning and Performance Research Center and clinical assistant professor in educational psychology, and Dr. Denny Davis, emeritus professor, Washington State University.
