U264E·SUNDAY WORKSHOP: Using Guided Inquiry to Help Students Master Key Concepts and Process Skills
Workshop Sponsored Sessions
Sun. June 15, 2014 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Room 114, Indiana Convention Center
Session Description

Ticketed event: $60.00
In Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL), teams of three to five learners work on scripted inquiry activities and investigations designed to help them discover concepts and construct their own knowledge. Using assigned team roles and meta-cognition, learners develop process skills and individual responsibility. The instructor serves as a facilitator, not a lecturer. Studies over the last 20 years show that POGIL can significantly improve student performance. More information, including sample activities, is at http://pogil.org and http://cspogil.org.

Speaker
  1. Mr. Clifton L Kussmaul
    Green Mango Associates, LLC

Clifton Kussmaul teaches computer science at Muhlenberg College, and has developed POGIL activities for CS1, CS2, software engineering, and AI. He is a member of the POGIL Project Steering Committee, and is the PI for an NSF TUES Type 1 Grant to develop POGIL activities for CS and to foster a community of CS faculty who use and develop such materials. During 2009-2010, Dr. Kussmaul was a Visiting Fulbright Scholar at the University of Kerala, India, where he used POGIL and related techniques in graduate courses. His professional interests include active learning, free and open-source software, distributed collaboration and knowledge management, and entrepreneurship.
This workshop is based on workshops developed and used extensively by the POGIL Project (http://pogil.org). Kussmaul completed the POGIL Project facilitator training workshop in January 2011, and has facilitated or co-facilitated POGIL workshops at SIGCSE 2012 & 2013, CS&IT 2012 & 2013, IEEE Technology for Education 2012 (Hyderabad, India). He has also facilitated or co-facilitated half-day, full-day, and multi-day workshops in the U.S. and in India, for faculty and staff in CS, engineering, and other disciplines.
