This is a closed session for members of the nine I-Corps-L participating teams, teaching team, and evaluation team to exchange observations and challenges since the program’s end. While this session is exclusive for the audiences listed above, conference attendees are encouraged to join the afternoon workshop (U406B I-Corps-L Afternoon Workshop) to learn more about the I-Corps-L pilot program. An initiative of the National Science Foundation and ASEE, I-Corps-L seeks to foster an entrepreneurial mindset among educators, enabling them to promote and gain broad acceptance of their innovative products and approaches.
Karl A. Stephen Hundley is chair of the Department of Technology Leadership and Communication, associate professor of organizational leadership and supervision, and associate vice chancellor for strategic initiatives in the School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in leadership development, human resource management, and organizational research. Hundley holds a Ph.D. from American University and bachelor's and master's degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Jennifer DeBoer is a postdoctoral associate for educational research at MIT's Teaching and Learning Laboratory. She earned a Ph.D. in international education policy studies from Vanderbilt University, where her dissertation looked at the trajectory of engineering student formation and the ways in which engineering attainment and achievement are affected by school factors, parental and peer influences, infrastructure and physical resources, and the context in which educational tools are accessed. She is the current Global Student Forum international chair for the Student Platform for Engineering Education Development (SPEED).
Lynn G. Brown is the corporate higher education and STEM international program manager for the
Boeing Company, developing corporate policy and working across company organizations to align higher education engagements and funding to various Boeing country strategies. She has served as chair of the ASEE Corporate Member Council's Special Interest Group for International Engineering Education. She holds a master's in curriculum and assessment from Northern Arizona University and pursued a Ph.D. in higher educational administration at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Information-Rich Engineering Design Model (Fosmire and Radcliffe), which received the 2012 PIC-IV Best Paper award, provides the foundational underpinning for the workshop. Jon Jeffryes is an engineering librarian at the University of Minnesota, where he is subject liaison to Biomedical, Civil, Industrial and Mechanical Engineering departments and manages the Libraries Standards Collection. Jon has a MA-LIS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a B.A. in English from Grinnell College. His research interests are focused on the information needs of engineers and information literacy and teaching.
Michael Fosmire is the head of the Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Technology Division and Professor of Library Science of the Purdue University Libraries. He has written extensively on the role of information in active-learning pedagogies and the integration of information literacy in science and technology curricula.
David Radcliffe is the Kamyar Haghighi Head of the School of Engineering Education and the Epistemology Professor of Engineering Education at Purdue University. His teaching and research interests span design, sustainable systems, engineering education and professional development, innovative learning spaces, and knowledge management.
Amy S. Van Epps is an associate professor of library science and engineering librarian at Purdue University, where she is subject librarian for engineering education, industrial engineering, and nuclear engineering in the College of Engineering, and computer graphics technology, computer and information technology, and technology leadership and innovation in the College of Technology. Ruth Wertz is a doctoral candidate in the School of Engineering Education at Purdue University. She holds a master of science degree in civil engineering from Purdue University and a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Trine University (formerly Tri-State University). Ms. Wertz is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Indiana with over six years of field experience and eight years of classroom teaching experience. Ms. Wertz’s research interests include teaching and learning engineering in online course formats, and the development of information literacy in engineering students.
Jay Bhatt is the liaison librarian for engineering at Drexel University. He is responsible for building library collections in engineering subject areas, outreach to faculty and students, and teaching information and research skills to faculty and students in engineering, biomedical engineering, and related subject areas. He provides individual and small group consultations to students, instructional sessions to specific classes, online research support in both face-to-face and distance-learning programs, and workshops for specialized research areas. John Schneider is the director of educational initiatives at Digilent, Inc., and an associate professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at Washington State University (WSU). Design Heuristics is an empirically derived and validated approach for creating product designs. Our research has shown that concepts created by engineering students using Design Heuristics are more complex, diverse, and creative.
This workshop will review relevant research studies and introduce Design Heuristics as a creativity tool. Participants will practice using Design Heuristics to generate concepts, and we will demonstrate ways to implement it effectively in your classroom in short instructional activities. Participants will be provided with a set of Design Heuristics cards, instructions for classroom presentation and activities, and access to instructional videos.
Shanna Daly has a B.E. in chemical engineering from the University of Dayton and a Ph.D. in Engineering Education from Purdue University. Her research focuses on idea generation, design strategies, design ethnography, creativity instruction, and engineering practitioners who return to graduate school. Her work is often cross-disciplinary, collaborating with colleagues from engineering, education, psychology, and industrial design.
Seda Yilmaz is an assistant professor of industrial design at Iowa State University. She earned her doctorate from the University of Michigan’s Design Science Program in 2010 with a dissertation entitled "Design Heuristics." Her work focuses on design cognition and creativity, cross-disciplinary design team dynamics, information processing in concept generation, and cognitive strategy changes among design domains and implementation of these strategies in pedagogical instruction.

In Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL), teams of three to five learners work on scripted inquiry activities and investigations designed to help them discover concepts and construct their own knowledge. Using assigned team roles and meta-cognition, learners develop process skills and individual responsibility. The instructor serves as a facilitator, not a lecturer. Clifton Kussmaul teaches computer science at Muhlenberg College, and has developed POGIL activities for CS1, CS2, software engineering, and AI. Dr. Kathryn Jablokow is associate professor of mechanical engineering and engineering design at Penn State University. She holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Ohio State University, Dr. Jablokow’s teaching and research interests include problem solving and creativity in science and engineering, as well as robotics and controls. Dr. Bonnie H. Ferri, the associate chair for undergraduate affairs in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech, teaches a MOOC on linear circuits primarily aimed at students who are not ECE majors. Cory Hixson earned his B.S. in engineering science from Penn State University in 2007, graduating with honors. He is currently a NSF Graduate Research Fellow and is pursuing a master's in industrial and systems engineering and a Ph.D. in engineering education at Virginia Tech. Experience as both a professional engineer and high school educator led him to Virginia Tech to pursue a doctoral degree in engineering education. Jameel Ahmed has been teaching in the Applied Biology and Biomedical Engineering Department at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology since 1999. He earned a B.S. in bioengineering from Syracuse University in 1990 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Northwestern University in 1993 and 1997, respectively.

Robert M. Bunch is a professor of physics and optical engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and an Innovation Fellow at Rose-Hulman Ventures. The purpose of this session is to introduce participants to inquiry methods other than surveys and have them practice matching methods to inquiry questions and scenarios. This will help early career educational researchers improve their own evaluation methodology by giving them both the language of and practice with inquiry methods. Ultimately, participants will be able to answer inquiry methods without solely relying on a survey. Shannon M. Sipes has served as the director of assessment at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology since 2004. She is a unique resource for faculty with her background in social science and education combined with experience applying it to STEM fields. Sipes holds B.S. and M.A. degrees in psychology and is currently finishing her Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with a focus on higher education. Sarah A. Forbes is currently the director of data management and reporting at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, managing data and data reporting for all functional units on campus. She acts as a liaison between faculty members and institutional databases, helping to match archival data to faculty needs. Additionally, Forbes administers survey data collection on campus involving large groups.
