U215·CANCELLED: WORKSHOP: Development of Community Engagement Efforts - The Blueprint Process
Workshop Community Engagement Division (COMMENG)
Sun. June 23, 2013 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
A402, Georgia World Congress Center
Session Description

Free ticketed event
The proposed Community Engagement Blueprint Workshop focuses on the development of new community engagement (CE) programs, or the enhancement of an existing program, for engineering education. These programs are often referred to as service-learning, community-engaged learning, learning-through-service, etc. and involve various pedagogies that partner students, faculty, and community leaders in collaboration around a community’s needs. Community engagement programs may be curricular or extra-curricular, domestic or international, and may be structured in a variety of ways, but centers on authentic education and broad skill development for students as well as true collaboration with a community.

The workshop will be highly interactive and practical in nature. Through the use of a “blueprint” for program development, the workshop keenly focuses on the design, management, and assessment necessary to develop strong and sustainable CE programs for engineering education.

Participants can expect to leave the workshop with a CE program plan that includes strategies that make sense for the participant, based on their interests and institution. Participants will also gain:
• an understanding of the essential principles of CE;
• enough knowledge, confidence, and competence to begin or expand CE efforts at their institution; and
• strong connections to other members of the workshop and a connection to the larger community of CE practitioners; connections we hope will continue as they implement their ideas

Workshop participants will be asked to present a poster on their proposed CE project at the 2014 ASEE conference that details results from their effort.

Speakers
  1. Dr. Chris Swan
    Tufts University

Christopher Swan is Associate Dean of Undergraduate Curriculum Development in the School of Engineering and an associate professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Tufts University. He has additional appointments in the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service and Center for Engineering Education and Outreach at Tufts. He has also served as chair of ASEE Environmental Engineering Division (2007) and is the current program chair of the Community Engagement in Engineering Education Constituent Committee. Dr. Swan’s current research interests in engineering education focus on project-based learning and service-based pedagogies.

  2. Prof. Kurt Paterson P.E.
    James Madison University

Kurt Paterson will be the head of the Engineering Program at James Madison University starting July 2013. Kurt’s background is in Civil and Environmental Engineering and has significant experience in higher education, and in working with organizations such as the Boeing Company and NASA.

  3. Dr. Angela R Bielefeldt P.E.
    University of Colorado Boulder

Angela Bielefeldt, Ph.D., P.E., is a Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder in the Department of Civil, Environmental, & Architectural Engineering (CEAE). She is currently the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Education in CEAE and has served as the ABET assessment coordinator since 2008. She began incorporating service-learning (SL) projects into the capstone design course for environmental engineering in 2001. This began her journey to determine how to rigorously assess the learning outcomes for students who worked on SL projects as compared to other types of projects in the course. Her engineering education research interests also include students’ attitudes and knowledge about sustainable engineering, engineering ethics, and attracting and retaining women in engineering.
