Using Video to Tie Engineering Themes to Foundational Concepts

Presented at Curriculum Development and Multidisciplinary Instruction

Authors
  1. Dr. Darshita N. Shah Teaching and Learning Laboratory at MIT [biography]

Darshita (Dipa) Shah is the Associate Director for Teaching and Learning in MIT's Teaching and Learning Lab (TLL). Dipa's primary role is to assist in the development of curricular innovations on campus and to provide professional development around teaching and learning for graduate students and faculty.

Before joining TLL, Dipa played an integral role in developing instructional materials for the Engineering is Elementary (EiE) project at the Museum of Science in Boston. Used by more than 25,000 teachers, EiE is a research-based program that reinforces elementary science topics, creativity, problem solving, and teamwork skills through hands-on engineering design challenges. Dipa also helped establish proof-of-concept for Engineering Adventures, a new engineering curriculum being designed specifically for use in after-school and camp settings.

Dipa previously served as a member of the education staff at The Discovery Museum and Planetarium in Bridgeport, Connecticut. There, she trained and supervised science instructors, developed and taught hands-on physical science labs for Grades 3-8 in the museum and in after-school programs, and managed various grant-funded projects.

Dipa received her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University and her Ph.D. in Chemical and Biological Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her doctoral research focused on the development of polymeric biomaterials for heart valve tissue engineering.

  2. Jennifer E French Teaching and Learning Laboratory at MIT [biography]

Jennifer joined the teaching and learning laboratory at MIT as a Postdoctoral Associate for Mathematics Education at the beginning of the video project, on year after completing a PhD in mathematics at MIT. She was one of the team members who developed the mapping of the engineering curriculum map for the Singapore University of Technology and Design.

  3. Dr. Janet Rankin The Teaching & Learning Lab - MIT
  4. Dr. Lori Breslow Massachusetts Institute of Technology [biography]

Lori Breslow is a Senior Lecturer in Managerial Communication at the MIT Sloan School of Management.

She was the founding director of MIT Teaching and Learning Laboratory (TLL) from 1997 to 2015. TLL serves the Institute as part of the office of the Dean for Undergraduate Education.

Breslow's research focuses on the development and impact of pedagogical, curricular, and technological innovations in higher education. As TLL’s director, she was responsible for designing, leading or supervising over 80 studies on educational change. Along with educational researchers in TLL and Harvard, as well as collaborators in MIT’s department of physics, Breslow did some of the earliest research on massive open online courses (MOOCs). Her current studies include examining the use of the MITx platform in blended learning courses, and a multi-institutional, international study of the teaching and learning of communication as a 21st-century skill.

Breslow has collaborated both in the U.S. and internationally on a number of initiatives to improve college teaching and learning. Currently, a curriculum design approach she developed is the basis of an initiative in South Africa to improve STEM education in that country’s technical universities. She was the codirector of the Teaching and Learning Network, a collaboration between MIT and the University of Cambridge, and consulted on MIT’s partnerships to create new universities in Singapore and Abu Dhabi. Breslow has been invited to speak about her work at the New York Times’ School for Tomorrow symposium, the President’s Task Force on Science and Technology (PCAST), the New American Foundation, and the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). In 2013, she and her coauthors won the award for Best Paper at the American Society for Engineering Education conference. Her research has been cited in The Wall Street Journal, the Chronicle of Higher Education, and Inside Higher Education.

Breslow holds a BA from Indiana University and a PhD from New York University.
