I got into engineering education after realizing how much I enjoyed being a TA in graduate school. I noticed early on that I spent a lot of my spare time thinking about how to best explain course material, and I didn’t mind putting in late nights to ensure that I was prepared for recitations. Overall, graduate school confirmed my passions for teaching. Many students comment that I am very helpful in explaining course material.
Interacting with students
In the field of engineering, constructive criticism is often more prevalent than encouragement, so I take opportunities to call out students’ strengths when I observe them.
Good communication skills are often overlooked by engineering students. I try to model good communication when I respond to student emails, and I give very specific feedback to students on lab reports to help them improve their writing skills. I value personal interaction with each of the students in my courses, and I am very intentional about fostering interaction with students. Students find me very approachable, and this naturally leads to questions and conversations outside of class where I have the opportunity to mentor students.
Outside of work I play a lot of sports, such as racquetball, table tennis, soccer, ultimate frisbee, tennis, squash, and badminton, in my spare time. During the summer months, I enjoy camping, hiking, backpacking, and kayaking.
